Submission of Applications for Travel Bursaries

Biodiversity Informatics is a global activity, and for this reason the organizers of the e- Biosphere 09 Conference are committed to ensuring global participation. With this goal in mind, between 30 and 40 travel bursaries will be awarded, on a competitive basis, to assist potential participants who might not otherwise be able to attend the Conference because of limited access to travel support. Applications are particularly encouraged from developing country citizens.

Eligibility: To qualify for a Travel Bursary, an applicant must be either:

(a) from a developing country, and be a member of one of the following groups:

  • Researcher, professor, teacher or graduate student in an area that contributes to or utilises Biodiversity Informatics;
  • Government official from a ministry to which Biodiversity Informatics and/or its applications are relevant (e.g. Research, Conservation, Environment, Agriculture); or
  • A representative of a not-for-profit organization that promotes or utilises Biodiversity Informatics and/or its applications.

Or

(b) a graduate student from any country. PLEASE NOTE: These applications will only be considered if funds are available after meritorious applications from developing country applicants have been supported.

Travel Support Provided: The travel bursaries are meant to offset most, but not necessarily all, the costs of attending the Conference, including return economy airfare from the recipient's home institution, an allocation toward the cost of hotel, meals and incidental expenses, and a waiver of the Conference registration fee.

Criteria for Review of Applications: Applications for travel bursaries will be reviewed by the Conference Programme Committee. Support will be awarded to those applicants who have the greatest demonstrated interest and involvement in Biodiversity Informatics. Preference will be given to:

  • Applicants who have submitted poster abstracts that have been accepted for presentation at the e-Biosphere 09 Conference;
  • Researchers and graduate students with active involvement in projects or initiatives that contribute to or utilise Biodiversity Informatics; and
  • Government officials with policy-making responsibilities in areas related to the practice or use of Biodiversity Informatics.

Application Submission Process and Deadlines: Applications for travel bursaries must be made through this web-based submission form. Applicants will immediately receive an automated confirmation that their application has been received.

The application deadline and other important dates are:

  • 15 December 2008: Deadline for submission of applications for travel bursaries and poster abstracts
