e-Biosphere 09 Conference Website

Submission of Abstracts

The organizers of the e-Biosphere 09 Conference invite students, researchers, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders in Biodiversity Informatics to submit abstracts for poster presentations (see Conference website, www.e-biosphere09.org for additional information). All accepted submissions will be included in an Abstract Volume that will be posted on the Conference website in May 2009 and distributed to registrants at the 1-3 June 2009 Conference. The organizers plan to accept approximately 275 abstracts for poster presentations.

The e-Biosphere 09 Conference is also accepting applications for computer demonstration booths and exhibit displays. Please refer to Information for Exhibitors.

Poster Display Area. Display boards for posters measuring up to 90 cm by 120 cm will be provided free of charge for all accepted posters.* Posters will be on display in the Whittle Room on the third floor of the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (QEIICC), adjacent to the Fleming Room in which the Conference's main plenary sessions will be held. Sessions on the first and last days of the Conference have no plenary presentations so that participants can visit poster presentations, demonstrations of databases and software, and commercial exhibits. Presenters of posters, demonstrations and exhibits are expected to be present at or near the poster or demonstration during these sessions. Participants will also have access to these during all lunch and coffee/tea breaks

* At least one of the authors of each accepted abstract must register for the e-Biosphere 09 Conference prior to 1 April 2009 for the poster abstract to be included in the Abstracts Volume and for a display board to be assigned to the poster

Poster Presentation Content. Poster abstracts must not exceed 250 words (excluding title, authors, and institutional affiliation) and must relate to some aspect of Biodiversity Informatics or its application. Poster presentations allow their authors to present a wide range of activities related to Biodiversity Informatics and to discuss them with the diverse Conference participants. Posters will be grouped into thematic categories such as:

  • Technical aspects (e.g., standards, database protocols)
  • Computer science research on biodiversity data (e.g., ontologies, semantic technology)
  • Information science research on integration and use of biodiversity data
  • Networking (e.g., database connectivity, social networking)
  • Applications (e.g., agriculture, conservation, environment)

Review Process. The abstracts will be evaluated by the Conference's Programme Committee using the following criteria:

  • Relevance: Does the abstract present information on an important aspect of Biodiversity Informatics and its varied applications?
  • Originality: Does the abstract broaden the scope and/or depth of Biodiversity Informatics and/or its application(s)?
  • Scientific Credibility: Is the approach presented in the abstract based on sound principles and current knowledge in biodiversity informatics, computer science, and/or other relevant fields of research?

Submission Process. Abstracts must be submitted via this web-based submission form. Submitters will immediately receive an automated confirmation message via email

Submission Deadline and Important Dates:

  • 15 December 2008: Deadline for submission of abstracts
  • 1 February 2009: Submitters will be informed of evaluation results
  • 1 April 2009: Deadline for registration of at least one co-author per accepted abstract
  • 1 May 2009: Conference Abstracts Volume posted on Conference website
